kaaninnchenFun, upbeat, playful, childish, Momiji is the kind of person who would be hard to miss in a crowd because of his overly bright disposition around others and it is very rare that one would see him without a smile on his face. Like the Zodiac sign he was cursed under, he is very energetic and this can tend to annoy some people, while others find it to be quite charming and basically in a word, cute. This is seen quite often when he makes plans ahead of time to take Tohru to a Hot Springs as a White Day gift and later inviting her and the other Soumas out to their summer house during their vacation.
Due to his appearance, it is easy to mistake him as being younger than he genuinely is, as seen when Tohru had been surprised to find out he was only one year below her (15) in age difference. A very noticeable trait about Momiji is that despite the fact he is a boy, he is often seen dressing quite androgynous, usually wearing frilly tops mixed with the mostly shorts that he wears. He has no problems with the way he dresses and is quite comfortable with the things he wears, which is seen when he starts his first day of high school wearing the Girl's version of the school uniform with shorts because he feels it suits him better much to the chagrin of Kyou and the school's former president, whose position is later taken up by Yuki.
While he is not above teasing others, especially his cousins he is thoughtful of other people. An example of this is when he visits Shigure, Yuki and Kyou who ask why Tohru had spent all of her hard-earned money buying them all Valentine's candy instead of thinking of her own expenses and he proceeds to tells them about a book one of his classmates read them where a traveller would give away all his money and possessions because people made up false stories of their suffering and he would help them without a second thought, so everyone called him a fool. Momiji explained that unlike his classmates who had laughed at this, he did not believe that anyone who chose to help others was foolish.
Momiji is a very strong individual, even though looking at him one might not believe so right away. In contrast to his cheerful, friendly nature he is emotionally strong and there are times when he can be very serious with thinking about things when the time comes for it, and somewhat melancholic. This is mostly because underneath his bright demeanor he harbors a sad, burdening past. When Momiji had first been born and his mother held him, because he was one of the members of the Souma family members born of with the Zodiac curse he turned into Rabbit and this frightened and confused her. This caused her much mental pain to the point that she rejected Momiji, her only son completely. She even requested Hatori Souma, the assigned doctor to take care of the Souma family members to erase her memories of Momiji and when asked if she was certain with this decision she told him the only regret she had was ever having that 'thing' ever come out of her. Regardless of this, Momiji never grows to resent his mother, and even states that he wished she didn't choose to forget about him. Instead, he uses this pain as strength, stating that he wanted to keep all his memories, whether they were good or painful. He'd told Tohru that he wanted to keep his memories until the day came that they wouldn't hurt him anymore because he believes there is no such thing as a memory that should be forgotten.
Although he doesn't show it often, he is very ardent about the things he wants. This can be seen when Tohru reveals to him that his younger sister Momo had been watching over him in hopes that he would be her big brother and he was unaware of this, saying that he was extremely happy to learn that she wanted him to be in her life, even though she didn't know who he truly was since his father forbid him from allowing his mother to see him and interacting with her at all. He reveals that he wants to become a great Violinist so that he can have a concert in hopes that his mother, father and sister would come as a family to watch him play.
In a sense, Momiji is quite open-minded and can say things that would be suggestive the nature they are spoken, but to him it seems natural ad he doesn't understand how some of his decisions or the things he says can come off as negative, such as during the trip to the Hot Springs he openly says he wants to bathe and sleep with Tohru - of course he meant this innocently but to other people it may not come off that way, and sound rather more precocious than it is.
Like anyone else, Momiji is not without his affections. He can be very protective of the ones he cares about. This especially goes for the one he loves, such as seen during a conversation he has with Kyou, he reveals that he likes Tohru and it is clearly seen that He is willing to go to any lengths to ensure her safety, later standing up to Akito in an attempt to protect Tohru from harm which resulted in him being struck for his disobedience. After the matter is resolved he promptly begins to cry and apologizes, feeling guilty for not being able to keep her out of harm. Another example of this is how during their first meeting he immediately hugs her, which transforms him and even after this he is constantly close to Tohru, teasing Kyou about liking her and saying that he hopes to one day find a girlfriend who is just like her.
